In 2007, sales of the German chemical industry totalled €173.6 billion. It is the fourth largest industry in Germany in terms of turnover, just after the auto, machinery and equipment, and electrical and electronics sectors. The chemical industry is very diverse, ranging from relatively mature to new high tech areas such as those related to bio- and nanotechnology.
Some 2,000 companies in Germany produce chemical products. Over 90% are small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) with under 500 staff. More than one third of chemical industry employees work for these SMEs, generating roughly 30% of total sales.
Contributing nearly one fourth of total EU chemicals turnover, the German chemical industry is the largest in Europe and the fourth largest in the world. The EU is the main market for the German chemical industry with nearly 65% of exports. North America, Central and Eastern Europe and East Asia are other important export destinations.
The chemical industry federation of Germany, VCI e.V., represents about 1,600 chemical companies, which is more than 90% of the entire German chemical industry. It covers all sectors of the chemical industry: polymers, fine and specialty chemicals, petrochemicals, detergents and cosmetics, basic inorganic chemicals and pharmaceuticals. This applies only in terms of sales.
