Chemical industry
The sector represents more than a fifth of the turnover achieved by all Belgian manufacturing industry, nearly the half of the total R&D expenditures in the private sector in Belgium and more than 30% of total exports. The chemical and life sciences industry is the country’s second largest manufacturing sector and is a multifaceted sector including the following: organic and inorganic basic chemistry and fertilizers; parachemistry (paints, varnishes, printing inks, mastics, wood protection products; human and veterinary pharmaceuticals); greases and oils, soaps, detergents, cosmetics, perfume, toiletry and hygiene products, products for industry, agriculture and gardening; rubber and plastics processing; biotechnology; collection, treatment and recycling of waste; chemical engineering; research testing and analysis laboratories, and others.
National association
essenscia, the federation of chemical industries and life sciences in Belgium, has about 700 members. Besides its competency centers dealing with federal issues , essenscia comprises three regional divisions and nearly 20 sector groups. This structure enables the optimization of services to member companies and supports their development.
