IYC: closing on a high note

More than 800 people from 70 countries descended on Brussels to attend the International Year of Chemistry 2011 (IYC) official closing ceremony.

With its goals to increase the public appreciation of chemistry in meeting world needs, to encourage interest in chemistry among young people, and to generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry, IYC sparked events worldwide. These included the “Global Chemistry Experiment - Water: A Chemical Solution”, with the experimental protocols being downloaded over 46,000 times!

Whilst signalling an end to IYC, the closing event featured a look into the future with discussion of a report, “The world in 2050”, by young professionals working in the chemical and science arena. In it, they set out their expectations from the life sciences and chemicals sector, and governments, in building a better world by 2050.
