Successful GPS workshop in Singapore
As part of its commitment to the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), the chemical industry has been implementing its Global Product Strategy (GPS) initiative. Activities include a global programme of capacity building workshops.
In Singapore, ICCA together with the Japan Chemical Industry Association (JCIA) recently held such a workshop to communicate how GPS can be carried out alongside industry’s well-established Responsible Care performance initiative. Hosted by the Singapore Chemical Industry Council, the event drew 75 representatives from 46 different companies and organizations, including ASEAN associations (Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia), and government authorities. Support for the event also came from Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower, National Environment Agency and the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
Overviews of the GPS and chemicals management were followed by company case studies, the chemical management policy perspective in Singapore and a panel discussion. This type of event lays the foundation for industry to introduce more ‘hands-on’ workshops and develop best practice sharing as GPS implementation moves forward.
The GPS is improving the global chemical industry’s product stewardship performance by recommending measures to be taken by companies, working together with their chemical associations and in cooperation with other companies and associations along the chemical value chain. It includes key components such as: Guidelines for product stewardship; a tiered process for completing risk characterization and risk management actions for chemicals in commerce; and partnerships with downstream customers and other stakeholders to enhance global product stewardship.
